Bakrid is a festival of about sacrifice, and selflessness. This festival reflects unwavering obedience of Prophet Ibrahim to Allah. And the power of sacrifice. Every year this festival is observed in the final month of the Islamic lunar calendar. The sighting of the crescent moon will decide the date of celebration.
Muslim people woke up early in the morning, take bath and wear new clothes. They gather together at mosques or open grounds and do a special “Eid Mubarak” prayer. They commemorates the story of Prophet Ibrahim’s willingness to sacrifice his son Ismail in obedience to God and how the God replaced Ismail with a ram at the last moment. This story highlights the act of faith and submission. As an act of respect to the Prophet Ibrahim’s obedience to God the muslim people sacrifice a goat, sheep, cow, or camel. The whole meat is divided into three parts. They take one part for their own family consumption. They distribute one part to friends, and the remaining part to the needy people. At some places the distribution of food and clothes to the underprivileged will be observed.
