The Union government planned to widen the 107-km stretch from Mahabalipuram to Puducherry in 2018. It is a bid to improve the road connectivity to Puducherry.
This project comes under the Bharatmala Pariyojana Phase-I scheme (Highways project). The union government sanctioned Rs 3,000 crore for this project.
The government has a plan to widen this East Coast Road into four-lane divided highway road till Kanyakumari, India.
The total length of the East Coast Road (ECR) is about 777 km and it is built along the coast of the Bay of Bengal. The Tamil Nadu’s state capital city Chennai is well connected with Kanyakumari via Puduchery, Chidambaram, Ramanathapuram, Thoothukudi, and Kudankulam through this East Coast Road. The ECR is an most favourable alternate route to cover all the southern districts of Tamil Nadu.
The improvement of 113.2 km of ECR from Kudumiyandithoppu near Chennai to Koonimedu on the outskirts of Pondicherry will be done on a long term concession basis.

The Government of Tamil Nadu will implement it under Engineering Procurement Contract (EPC).
East Coast Road expansion Works In Other Areas
East Coast Road expansion works in Mayiladuthurai and Karaikal districts will get completed before the end of this year 2024. The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has speeded up the process.
A new bridge construction across the Kollidam river aims to widen NH-32 connecting Chennai and Thoothukudi through the East Coast Road. This commuting via Karaikal port will improve connectivity between coastal areas. The project is planned for a of Rs 2,661.75 crore.

Rs. 25 crores is allocated for new rail line project – Chennai-Cuddalore via Mahabalipuram (179.28 km). It was highlighted in the Union Budget 2024-25 of Railways.
