This project comes under the Bharatmala Pariyojana Phase-I scheme (Highways project). The union government sanctioned Rs 3,000 crore for this project.
The government has a plan to widen this East Coast Road into four-lane divided highway road till Kanyakumari, India.
The total length of the East Coast Road (ECR) is about 777 km and it is built along the coast of the Bay of Bengal. The Tamil Nadu’s state capital city Chennai is well connected with Kanyakumari via Puduchery, Chidambaram, Ramanathapuram, Thoothukudi, and Kudankulam through this East Coast Road. The ECR is an most favourable alternate route to cover all the southern districts of Tamil Nadu.
The improvement of 113.2 km of ECR from Kudumiyandithoppu near Chennai to Koonimedu on the outskirts of Pondicherry will be done on a long term concession basis.
