Chennai OMR Road has all kinds of facilities and it has become a good place to live in Chennai. This trend is expected to grow in the coming years. The full form of OMR is Old Mahabalipuram Road. It starts from Madhya Kailash Temple on Sardar Patel Road in Adayar and terminates on East Coast Road near Mahabalipuram. The total stretch of the OMR Road is 45 km.
The OMR Road connects Chennai, Tamil Nadu with Mahabalipuram in Chengalpattu District, Tamil Nadu. Actually OMR Chennai is an IT Expressway. It is an largest IT corridor in the northern suburbs of Chennai. The Tidel Park and many other major IT/ITES Companies in the country are situated along the OMR road.
The OMR Chennai status in the 1980s
- Outing Spot Link Road – In the 1980s, OMR was a recreational road in the mind of the people of Chennai. They use it to go to Mahabalipuram, and VGP Golden Beach for picnics purpose.
- Crossroads – People used it as a short-cut road to cover the other districts in Tamilnadu. Tourists & Travelers especially going to Pondichery and South Tamilnadu used it to reduce their travelling time & distance. They can travel at high speed time along this OMR Road.
- Jolly Ride Road – It was the drivers favorite road. There were no speed restrictions like speed breakers, U-turns. Drivers enjoyed high speed jolly ride to the maximum.
- Traffic Free Road – The vehicles movement were less on this OMR Chennai road. The local Bus Services, cars, autos and bikes were available till Thiruvanmiyur border only.
- Lacks basic facilities – There were no good hotels, and tea shops. OMR was a place where people’s basic needs could not be met. A middle class people could live their daily life there.
- Remote area – Not suitable for residential purpose. People movement were very limited and vechicular traffic were less in OMR Chennai road.

The Upcoming Projects On the Pipeline for OMR Chennai
- Chennai Metro Rail Ltd. (CMRL) phase II project plans to start operating their train services from Nehru Nagar in Perungudi till Siruseri by 2028. The 116.1km of 20km elevated line of the phase-2 is likely to be opened to the public in stages between 2025 and 2028. (from Taramani to Siruseri Sipcot divided into two sections.)
- The construction work of metro stations on OMR IT corridor already commenced. The total number of elevated metro stations on OMR IT corridor between Taramani and Sholinganallur is 10. They cover 10km under phase-2.
- OMR Bypass Bridges – The First bridge is almost completed and the second bridge work is in progress. The work is expected to get completed in 6 months period.
- The construction work of ’U’ shaped flyover near Tidel Park junctions is nearing its completion in OMR Chennai. Once the flyover is open, the right turn for vehicles coming from East Coast Rd will be hassle free. It will not be permitted towards Indira Nagar, and makes the Tidel Park Junction bidirectional.
- The road construction for Kelambakkam Bypass at Thaiyur end is in progress. This road will decongest the traffic in padur and kelambakkam belt.
- The Thiruporur has good potential to grow and the OMR Chennai – Thiruporur Bypass is a good sign for a progress.
- The food court construction near SSN University is in full swing.
- CSK High performance center is an upcoming high-performance centre in Chennai. It would aim to provide advanced training facilities to the cricket players. It will be integrated with club & statidum. The estimated cost is Rs.70cr. The land near Navalur was identified for construction by CSK. (adjacent to Siruseri), next to new CSK Club.
- OMR Chennai – Semmenchery is upcoming Sports City and OMR road widening is happening from Siruseri to Padur
- “ Sattva Knowledge City” is the Sattva’s Upcoming Project at Perungudi Toll. It will be with three towers (18 floors each). It will be an OMR’s Skyscraper.
- The New Chennai boundary for CMA with six satellite towns are encircling Chennai city – Minjur, Thiruvallur, Thirumazhisai & Mamallapuram. They are located along the outer boundary of CMA. The Chengalpet and Kanchipuram are located along the GST road & GWT road (Chennai – Bangalore road).
- The double decker elevated road construction is also going on.
- Thazhambur – Navalur Road expansion is going on.
- Flyover cum Metro on Shollinganallur & Thoraipakam will be built by the Chennai Metro Rail Ltd.,
- The Apollo is going to construct an 800 bed hospital at Karapakkam. It will be well connected hospital in terms of Metro and other transport facilities.
- There is a possibility for World Bank-funded Chennai City Partnership Prog Project. (SWITCH – Double-decker buses project). The MTC plans for it.
- A food Street with 12+ shops is getting ready to be opened in OMR Chennai down south in Senganmal after Kelambakkam.
- The PBEL Square is yet to be opened and one more food court is upcoming at Kalavakam Bypass near SSN collage. ( Everest EV Food Street )
- There is an upcoming theatre at Kalavakam. The construction is in full swing.
- STT (STT GDC INDIA) lays foundation at Siruseri Sipcot. The campus will have two data centers. Each with a total capacity of 50 MW IT load. By Sept 2025 the first data centre of 8MW capacity will be become operational. Target is 250MW of IT load capacity over the next 3-5 years
